Andrew Lloyd Webber és sok éven át vele együtt dolgozó alkotó társa, Tim Rice szövegíró kollégiumi szobatársakként találtak rá a József témára. Felnőttpukkasztó, szertelen művet alkottak belőle, amely 1967-ben oratórikus formában került színre. Már ebben a verzióban is halmozta a sikereket. "Felnőtt" színpadon, kibővítve, 1972-ben az edinburghi fesztiválon mutatták be. Webber végül is fittyet hányva a színpad törvényeinek, egymást követő dalok laza szerkezetű sorában meséli el a kiválasztott fiú történetét, akinek kitaszítottsága és felemelkedése a megbocsátás és a tolerancia nagy példázata.
