József Attila élete végén rendszeresen járt pszichiáterhez. Hetente háromszor jelent meg Gyömrői Editnél, aki ilyenkor arra kérte, hogy próbálja meg - lehetőleg mindenféle kontroll nélkül - elmondani mindazt, amire éppen gondol. A szabad asszociációs technika a pszichiátriai analízis bevett módszere, ennek segítségével az orvos következtetni tud a páciens gondolkodásmódjára, tudatalatti félelmeire, gátlásaira. A költő tisztában volt ezzel a technikával, maga is érdeklődött a lélektan iránt, olvasta Freud műveit, melyek a 20. század elején szinte divatolvasmánnyá váltak. Hogy tisztázza saját magát, hogy megszabaduljon bűntudatától, 1936 májusában arra gondolt, hogy nem csak szóban, hanem írásban is használja a szabad asszociációk módszerét.
Erre a terápiára nem orvosa kérte, Gyömrői Edit ugyanis elvileg ellenezte az írásos terápiát.
