Dr. Falke neheztel barátjára, Eisensteinre, és kis bosszút forralva nevetségessé akarja tenni.
Adélt, a szobalányt álmeghívóval elcsalja egy bálba, hogy Rosalinda asszony - kinek férje, Eisenstein épp ma este kezdi meg nyolc napos börtönbüntetését - nyugodtan fogadhassa régi hódolóját, a csodálatos hangú tenoristát.
Falke biztatására Eisenstein Orlovszky herceg palotájába megy, hogy a börtönbüntetése előtt egy kicsit szórakozzon. Mivel nem jelenik meg a fogdában, tévedésből az otthonában vacsorázó tenoristát viszik el a fogházba. Rosalinda nem szeretne egyedül maradni Szilveszterkor, inkább álruhában ő is elmegy Orlovszky herceg báljára. Eisenstein a bálban kitűnően érzi magát, - mitsem sejtve - hol saját szobalányának, hol saját feleségének udvarol. Az idő elszalad, éjfél után jelentkeznie kell a börtönben, ahol legnagyobb meglepetésére már cellájában ül az állítólagos Eisenstein. A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
The series launched in the 2025/26 season focuses on composers whose operas receive special attention during the season. Yet there are many singers who do not find a role in the works of these masters, but who would gladly sing from their rich vocal palettes.
