A Petőfi-mű ihletettségében készült daljáték már az ősbemutatón óriási sikert aratott, és egymás után százhatvanötször játszották el. Erre a magyar színházi életben korábban nem volt példa. Alig fél szezon alatt kétszázezer néző látta az előadást, a zenés játék kottájából félmillió, szövegéből egymillió példány fogyott el. Néhány hónapon belül huszonkilenc vidéki színház vette meg a darab előadási jogát. A bemutató után sokféle árucikk jelent meg „János vitéz” néven: vászontípus, kalap, szivarka és fénymáz (de azóta lett belőle mézeskalács, képeskönyv, diafilm, rajzfilm és t-shirt is).
