Csehov Ivanovja, néhány éve teljes hittel, fáradhatatlanul tekintett a jövőbe, aztán egyik napról a másikra – harmincöt évesen - elhatalmasodik rajta a rosszkedv, az undor önmagától és környezetétől. Bűntudat gyötri. Képtelen megfejteni ennek a változásnak az okát. Részlet, melyben feleségével – Anna Petrovnával – beszél:
" Galambocskám, kedveském, te kis boldogtalan, könyörgök, ne marasztalj itthon esténként.
Tudom, kegyetlen, igazságtalan dolog tőlem, hogy elmegyek, de engedd meg nekem ezt az igazságtalanságot.
Kínszenvedés nekem itthon ülnöm! Mihelyt lemegy a nap, rám telepszik a rosszkedv. És micsoda rosszkedv! Ne kérdezd, hogy mitől. Magam sem tudom. Esküszöm, hogy nem tudom."
