Az előadás alapjául szolgáló regény története a hitleri Németországban, egy középiskolában játszódik. Főszereplője egy középkorú, egyedül élő tanár, aki azt találja mondani a diákjainak: "a négerek is emberek". Az osztály ellenségesen reagál erre az egyszerű mondatra: követelik, hogy más tanár tanítsa őket a jövőben. Bár az igazgató közbenjárására a tanár folytathatja munkáját, de ezzel kezdetét veszi a tanár bűnbeesés-kálváriája.
