„Öregkoromba kezdtem ezt a verset,
Ezerkilencszáznegyvennégybe volt,
Förtelmes év! Az ország haldokolt,
Jöttek reá vad, égető keservek.”
Így kezdi Heltai Jenő – eddig kiadatlan – ostromnaplóját, majd folytatja:
„Ezek a kusza följegyzések napról-napra íródtak lakásokban és pincékben, óvó- és illemhelyeken, kórházban, börtönben, menekülés és bujkálás közben.”
Heltai beszámol a hétköznapi borzalmakról, és bár megjárta a csillagos házakat és a Gestapo börtönét, mégis bájos humorral és öniróniával mesél, anekdotázik. Felidézi ifjúságát, a boldog békeidők Budapestjét, elhangzanak korabeli sanzonok és a János vitéz dalaiból is néhány (a zongoránál Darvas Ferenc).
Emlékezni kell, és nem szabad felejteni, állapítja meg, bár „unokáink nem fogják ezt a kort megérteni”.
Az előadás időtartama 70-80 perc szünet nélkül.
