A történet középpontjában egy igazi nagy szerelem áll:
Az évek óta Nyugaton élő, világhírű, gyönyörű, magyar zongoraművésznő (Vári Brigitta) 1957 márciusában váratlanul hazaérkezik, hogy kiszabadítsa a Kádár-kormány börtönéből forradalmár-költő (Botta Viktor) férjét. A szovjet fegyveres beavatkozás miatt nemzetközileg elszigetelődött új hatalom ajánlatot tesz a házaspárnak: ha az Európa-szerte ünnepelt sztár-zongorista hajlandó a magyar fővárosban koncertezni, a költő pedig elnémul- szabadon távozhatnak az országból. Vajon az újonnan fellángolt szerelem legyőzheti-e a morális és művészi ellenállást, lehet-e alkut kötni ezzel a hatalommal? Háy Gyula darabja erős és egyértelmű válaszokat ad ezekre a kérdésekre.
