Az esti koncert után H. P. Miller, a Genfi Szimfonikusok maximalista karmestere fáradtan ér öltözőjébe, zenekara gyenge játéka miatt bosszankodva. Sokáig már nem kell vesződnie féltehetségű zenészeivel, mivel elnyerte a Berlini Filharmonikusok vezetőkarmesteri állását. A világhírre vágyó zenész ajtaján egy különös belga úr, Leon Dinkel kopogtat. A titokzatos rajongó kitartó precizitással, lépésről lépésre fosztja meg Millert nagyratörő álmaitól, szétszedve és elemeire bontva a karmester egoját és önbecsülését. A feszült, óramű pontosságú kamaradarab krimibe illő fordulatai három éve töretlen sikerrel kápráztatják el a párizsi közönséget és kritikusokat.
