Az estén George Frideric Händel Athalia című oratóriuma csendül fel, mely 1733. júliusában, a mester oxfordi látogatása alkalmával keletkezett. Händel az egyetem rektorának meghívására utazott Londonból Oxfordba (ahol állítólag a díszdoktori címet is felajánlották neki), s ottani, öt oratórium-előadásból álló koncertsorozata csúcspontjaként július 10-én a Sheldonian Theatre-ben vezényelte új művét, az Athaliát. Az oratórium eredeti megjelölése szerint „Oratorio; or Sacred Drama”, szövegét Samuel Humphreys írta Jean Racine utolsó, bibliai ihletésű színműve, az 1691-ben született Athalie alapján. Händel remekműve páratlan formai változatosságával, izgalmas és színes kórus- és szólótételeivel méltó társa Racine darabjának: a három felvonást tartalmazó zenedráma számtalan zenei csúcspontja közül is kiemelkednek a felvonások zárókórusai, azok közül is az első felvonás végén álló, felejthetetlenül komor és tragikus hangvételű „Halleluja”-tétel. A ritkán játszott kompozíciót 2009-ben már előadta a Capella Savaria és a Purcell Kórus, Athalia története ezen az estén a hazai historikus zenei élet kiváló szólistáinak közreműködésével, Kalló Zsolt koncertmester és Vashegyi György karmester irányításával hangzik el.

A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
There are evenings when our Opera House cannot perform because rehearsals are ongoing on stage until the evening. There are audience members who can only afford to hear their favourite pieces with a discount. And there are works that, although very popular, cannot be staged every season due to the congestion of productions.
