A zsidó naptár szerint ádár hónap 14. napján, az előző napnyugtától az aznapi első három csillag megjelenéséig (a Gergely-naptár szerint idén március 11-én) tartják purimot, az ószövetségi eredetű zsidó tavaszünnepet, a “zsidó farsangot”. A hagyományosan karneválokkal és társas összejövetelekkel együtt járó ünnepen a zsidók arra emlékeznek, hogy Eszter, Ahasvérus (Artaxerxész) perzsa király zsidó származású felesége megakadályozta, hogy a király főembere, Hámán elpusztítsa a Perzsiában élő zsidókat. A bibliai történet szerint Hámán, a király kegyeltje és minisztere meggyűlölte a zsidókat és az egész nemzetet ki akarta irtani. Naponta vetettek neki sorsot, hogy melyik nap kedvező a terv véghez vitelére, innen az ünnep neve – a “pur” sorsvetést jelent, ennek többes száma a purim.

Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
