Kay és Gerda nagymamájukkal élnek együtt nagy szeretetben. Egy nap a gonosz, hidegszívű Hókirálynő meglátogatja Kayt és magával viszi az országába, az örök jég birodalmába. Gerda azonban nem nyugszik bele, hogy elveszítette Kayt. Megígéri nagymamájának, hogy ha addig él is, felkutatja a Hókirálynő birodalmát és visszahozza a fiút szülőházába.
