A fiatal Rahel tanulmányait New Yorkban végzi, a nagymama túlélte a koncentrációs tábort, és az NDK-ban lett később meggyőződéses kommunista, Rahel édesanyja, Clara pedig sem a judaizmussal, sem a sikertelen kommunista kísérlettel nem tud azonosulni. Ő már igazi német. Hogyan lehet egyszerre szeretni is valakit, aki az agyunkra megy? Aki kibírhatatlan és elviselhetetlen, de mégiscsak az anyánk vagy a lányunk?
