A magyar származású Stephen Schwartz szövegíró-zeneszerző nevéhez olyan musicalek kötődnek, mint a Godspell, a Pippin, a Wicked valamint a Pocahontas, az Egyiptom hercege és a Bűbáj című filmek dalszövegei. A show ötletadója a rendező, John-Michael Tebelak volt, aki a színészekkel közös improvizációk során állította össze a musical szövegét bibliai példázatok és Jézus szenvedéstörténetének felhasználásával. A Godspell óriási sikere meglepte az akkor huszonhárom éves zeneszerzőt és az alkotó társulatot. A fiatal, friss, kirobbanó zenei hatásokra épülő musical középpontjában a fiatal korosztály istenkeresése, filozófiai és egyben a világ egyetemes kérdéseire reflektáló vitáik és a közösség születése áll.

A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
