Gerhart Hauptmann huszonhét évesen írta első darabját Napfelkelte előtt címmel, jó néhány évvel később pedig megszületett annak ikerdarabja, a Naplemente előtt. A konfliktus látszólag Clausen tanácsos időskori fellángolása miatt robban ki, melyet egy fiatal tanítónő iránt érez, a mélyben azonban kicsinyes acsarkodás, hatalom- és vagyonféltés húzódik meg, mely szétterjedő mételyként gyilkolja a családot.
