A Don Pasquale bemutatója idején, 1843-ban a század legfontosabb zenei műfajában, az operában Gaetano Donizetti számított a legjelentősebb élő alkotónak. Bellini 1835-ben meghalt, Rossini közel másfél évtizede örökre felhagyott az operakomponálással, Verdi még csak első sikereit aratta, Wagner a mai repertoáron szereplő darabjai közül csak A bolygó hollandi bemutatásán volt túl, a párizsi és bécsi zenei életet az olasz opera uralta.
Donizetti még ötven esztendős sem volt, negyed százada ünnepelt szerző, befejezett operáinak száma addigra túl volt a hatvanon, ősbemutatóit ünnepelte Nápoly, Milánó, Velence, Róma, Bécs és Párizs közönsége. A vígopera műfajának betetőzése a Don Pasquale, mely világszínvonalú basszistánk, a tíz esztendeje elhunyt Gregor József kedvenc szerepe volt. Őrá emlékezve készül új produkciónk, mely az opera buffa legjobb szegedi előadói hagyományait folytatja.

Since 1968, one generation after another has enjoyed the historically themed choreography, which treats the story of the ancient slave revolt in such a way that its true message is not the rebellion itself, but rather human emotions and choices under pressure.
