A Sevillai borbély után nagy várakozás előzte meg Beaumarchias Figaro-trilógiájának második részét a Figaro házasságát. A francia szerző drámáit a forradalom mulatságosan vidám előjátékaiként tartják számon, hiszen a darabban Figaro, a népi hős diadalmaskodik semmirekellő úri gazdáján, előre hirdetve, hogy nemsokára az egész francia nép diadalt ül gyűlölt urai fölött.
A történet fő sodrát nem adhatja más, mint a szerelem, s a hozzá elengedhetetlenül kapcsolódó féltékenység, versengés és cselszövény, titkos hódolók, fű alatti egyezségek, bosszúból meghódított és porrá zúzott szívek, nőért eldobott betyárbecsület és persze az első éjszaka joga...
Igazi, vérbő komédia, mely megnevetette már az ország, a nagyvilág színházrajongóit. És mi sem erősebb bizonyíték erre, minthogy XVI. Lajos első olvasásakor így kiáltott fel: „Ez borzasztó! Ezt sohasem szabad előadni! Inkább a Basteille szakadjon be!”
