Anna egy jómódú házaspárnál szobalányként dolgozik. A férj, Bernard rábeszéli feleségét, hogy látogassa meg vidéken élő édesanyját, mondván, neki is vidékre kell utaznia.Valós szándéka, hogy Cathrine-t, a szeretőjét felcsalogassa lakásába, csakhogy a feleség előtt is felcsillan a lehetőség a félrelépésre. Ha férje nincs otthon, találkozhatna barátjával, Roberttel otthon. Ezért Annát elküldi vidékre. Az utazásba mindenki beleegyezik, de ígéretét senki nem tartja be.
