Vagy mégsem? Berlioz - igaz, művét nem is operaként, hanem drámai legendaként jelöli meg - kísérletet tesz arra, hogy a szellemi magaslatok és földi vágyak közt vergődő Ember és a Sátán találkozásának, valóban ördögi szerződésének mélyen rejlő konfliktusával foglalkozzon.
A hatalmas drámai erejű képek sora és a Berlioz minden partitúráját jellemző briliáns hangszerelés e művet a Faust-téma egyik legkiválóbb, színpadi szempontból mindenképpen legerőteljesebb feldolgozásává teszi. Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) francia romantikus zeneszerző. Talán legszemélyesebb művét, a Faust elkárhozását 1846-ban mutatták be Párizsban.
