Compositions unfamiliar to Hungarian audiences will be performed alongside works by the period’s great German composer, Johann Sebastian Bach. The early baroque works of Adam Jarzębski, a central figure in the vibrant cultural life of 17th century Poland, are filled with treasures. The baroque ensemble will play three pieces from his Canzoni e Concerti – the dynamic Spandesa, ingenious Tamburetta, and Chromatica experimenting with superfluous primes.
At BFO’s 2017 Sándor Végh competition, the concert’s leader, Eszter Lesták Bedő, already presented Bach’s violin concerto in D minor. She will perform her own version of the piece that, though transformed by Bach into a harpsichord concerto, was successfully reconstructed.
The concert’s second half features singing compositions. Marcin Józef Żebrowski composed his music at the cultic Pauline Jasna Góra Monastery in the 18th century. Though showing baroque traits, his works tend to transition to classicism.
The concert features his sublime Magnificat, followed by the In virtute tua motetta, a bright laudation by Grzegorz Gerwazy Gorczycki (the “Polish Handel”) from his largely ecclesiastic oeuvre. The concert concludes with another liturgical piece, Bach’s White Sunday cantata, composed in 1725 in Leipzig.Bridging Europe festival is the joint production of the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Müpa Budapest.
