Euripidész drámája különleges mű. Eltérően a többi görög színműtől, nem a palota bejáratánál, hanem a palota és a város közötti senkiföldjén játszódik. Különleges az is, hogy az írói triász utolsó nagy szerzője megkérdőjelezi az istenek mindenhatóságát. A szereplők – az ismert mítosz alakjai – olyan nyíltsággal fordulnak szembe az Olümposszal, olyan komikus helyzetekbe bonyolódnak, mint egy becketti vígjáték clown-jai.
Karsai György klasszika-filológus ógörögből nyers-fordította a drámát; Térey János költő az időmértékes verselés formáját szigorúan megőrizve mai köznyelvünk fordulataival, képeivel, kifejezéseivel beszélteti a szereplőket magától értetődően és bravúrosan.
