Vád alá helyeznek egy 17 éves fiatalembert, aki brutális módon megvakított hat lovat az angliai Hampshire-ben. Az ügyészségen dolgozó fiatal nő felkeresi barátját, Martin Dysartot, a neves pszichiátert, s megkéri foglalkozzon a fiúval.
A pszichiáter terápiás beszélgetésekkel próbál közelkerülni Alanhez, felkeresi szüleit, az istálló gazdáját, a fiú barátnőjét is. A lelki oknyomozás során, ahogy egyre közelebb kerül a fiú démonjaihoz: a vallásos révületből, szexuális frusztrációkból, szülői elnyomásból, komplexusokból, a hazug társadalom elleni lázadásból kialakult szenvedélyes hitvilághoz; ezzel párhuzamosan saját árnyaival, hazug házasságával, szenvedélytelen, bebiztosított életével, pszichiáteri hitvallásával, módszereinek csapdáival, a társadalmi normák és az abnormitás határvonalainak megkérdőjelezésével is szembesülnie kell.
