Az Emil és a detekíveket úgy tartja számon az irodalomtörténet, mint az első istenigazában urbánus gyerekkönyvet: tehát nem virágos mezőn, sem sűrű, sötét erdőn játszódik, nem is az Óperenciás tengeren meg az üveghegyen is túl, hanem Berlinben, amely város akkoriban, amikor Kästner irodalmi pályafutása berobbant, épp az egyik legizgalmasabb és legellentmondásosabb korszakát élte: a Weimari Köztársaság röpke epizódját. Emilt a mamája az istenhátamögötti kisvárosból, ahol élnek, elküldi a rokonokhoz Berlinbe, világot látni. Ad vele némi pénzt, nem sokat, de eleget ahhoz, hogy fájjon, ha ellopják – és el is lopják, már a vonatúton, egy bácsi a kupéból. Emil tudja, hogy ő a tolvaj – de annál kevesebb, vagy inkább több esze van, semhogy rendőrért kiáltson, maga ered tehát a tolvaj nyomába a nagyváros labirintusában.

This ballet's plot is inspired by The Corsair, a famous verse written in 1814 by Lord Byron, who towered over an entire generation of English Romantic poets.
As it is a latent Kodály season, it seems only fitting that the concert at the OPERA honouring the events of 1956 should feature works by the composer. In that same year, the short-lived Revolutionary Council of Hungarian Intellectuals elected him as its president. Throughout his entire oeuvre, Kodály consistently reinforced Hungarian national identity. The programme gains both colour and a ceremonial character from the hymn-like and dance-infused compositions of his middle and later years.
