Rákosi Viktor regénye, az Elnémult harangok 1903-ban jelent meg és hamar bestseller lett, a színházak évtizedekig játszották adaptációját, kétszer is megfilmesítették. A sikersorozatot a kommunista rezsim törte meg, a drámát betiltották, a filmeket megsemmisítették. A regény Nemlaha György átdolgozásában és Pataki András rendezésében került most újra színpadra.
A történet egy erdélyi faluban játszódik a XX. század elején, ahová új református lelkész érkezik, aki a szegények vigasztalója, a magyarság megtartója akar lenni.
