Popova Jelena Ivanovna, a fiatal özvegy földbirtokosnő hetedik hónapja gyászolja elhunyt urát. Elhatározása szent és megmásíthatatlan: elzárkózik a világtól, haláláig gyászolni fog. Ekkor állít be hozzá hívatlanul Szmirnov Grigorij Sztyepanovics, hogy néhai férje tartozását behajtsa.
Leánykérés
Ivan Vasziljevics Lomov, földbirtokos, 35 évesen úgy dönt, hogy most már mindenképpen megházasodik. A szomszédba megy lánykérőbe, azonban kiderül, hogy az udvariassági társalgás még jó szomszédok között sem olyan zökkenőmentes. A valósággal való bármilyen egyezés pedig csupán a véletlen műve....

As it is a latent Kodály season, it seems only fitting that the concert at the OPERA honouring the events of 1956 should feature works by the composer. In that same year, the short-lived Revolutionary Council of Hungarian Intellectuals elected him as its president. Throughout his entire oeuvre, Kodály consistently reinforced Hungarian national identity. The programme gains both colour and a ceremonial character from the hymn-like and dance-infused compositions of his middle and later years.
This ballet's plot is inspired by The Corsair, a famous verse written in 1814 by Lord Byron, who towered over an entire generation of English Romantic poets.
