A darab az elvágyódásról szól. A 60-as évek végének Magyarországán egy érettségiző osztály a jövőt tervezi. A bezártságot érző fiatalság minden iránt érdeklődik, ami a vasfüggönyön túlról jön. Vágyódnak az ottani szabadságra. A nagy és kockázatos lépést nehéz megtenni, a disszidálás retorziói miatt. A lázadásból fakadó, nem indokolatlan kalandok véletlen tragédiákat, szerencsétlen sorsokat eredményeznek. A társaság vezéralakjai, Tomi és Robi különböző utakon indulnak el. Egyikük végül a „szabadságot választja”, másikuk „kalandvágyból itthon marad”. Anyai féltés, bulis haverok, egy öreg lemezárus, felébredő és múló szerelmek, szétszakadó barátságok, árnyalják a történetet. De mindvégig a fiatalság fékezhetetlen humora, pörgős életritmusa, hétköznapi örömei és nagy álmodásai sugározzák a derűt, az élet igenlését, a reményt.

There are evenings when our Opera House cannot perform because rehearsals are ongoing on stage until the evening. There are audience members who can only afford to hear their favourite pieces with a discount. And there are works that, although very popular, cannot be staged every season due to the congestion of productions.
A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
Bartók Béla’s two highly influential stage works explore the dynamics of the relationship between man and woman and the deeper layers of their personalities, as presented by creators who, through a fusion of tradition and innovation, reveal the possibilities inherent in these works for 21st-century audiences.
