A színdarab a nagy gazdasági világválság idején két vándormunkás tragikus történetét tárja elénk. George, az alacsony és fürge észjárású fiatalember és társa, Lennie, a lomha, szellemileg visszamaradott óriás egy kaliforniai tanyán vállalnak munkát. Közös álmuk egy saját tanya, ahol önállóan gazdálkodhatnak. Lennie-t együgyűsége folyton bajba sodorja, és George-nak igencsak észnél kell lennie, ha mindkettőjüket meg akarja óvni a következményektől.
John Ernst Steinbeck (1902-1968) Nobel-díjas amerikai regény-, novella- és színdarabíró. Legismertebb regényei az Érik a gyümölcs, az Édentől keletre és az Egerek és emberek. Az Egerek és emberek színpadi változata New Yorkban azonnali sikert aratott. A darab Pulitzer-díjat nyert.
