A téli tücsök valamikor nyári tücsök volt. De most tél van, hull a hó és érzi jól, hogy a nyár messze van, de olyan messze, hogy már alig tud visszaemlékezni rá. Így kezdődik a meseregény, melyben a tücsök a szigeten töltött szép nyár emlékeit idézi fel.

A zsályaszagú hátizsák zsebében került be a szobába, itt tölti nagy unalomban a telet. Kiugrik a hátizsák zsebéből, felszökken az írógép billentyűire, és le-leüt egy-egy betűt. Valamennyi leütött betű egy-egy szép nyári emléket idéz fel, a szigeten hagyott barátaira emlékezteti, és már nem szomorkodik, vidáman telnek a napok.
A finoman érzelmes, szép mese erről szól: hogyan lehet a szomorúságot örömmé változtatni.
