The two orchestral works that frame the concert, Antonio Casimir Cartellieri’s (1772–1807) overture to Rübezahl and his Symphony No. 3 in C major, offer a deeper immersion in the style and expressive world of the composer introduced at the first concert of the subscription series. Born in Poland to Italian paternal and Baltic-German maternal ancestors, Cartellieri spent most of his life in Vienna. Joseph Haydn’s (1732–1809) Cello Concerto in D major, whose authenticity was long debated, is the considerably younger sibling – by nearly a quarter of a century – of his C major concerto in the same genre. Thought to have been written for the Esterházy orchestra’s cellist Antonín Kraft, it is a sunny, energetic composition full of representative virtuosity. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony in B-flat major (K. 319) was composed in 1777 in Salzburg. Originally in three movements, the work was expanded to include a minuet in the composer’s new domicile of Vienna in the early 1780s. Representing the youngest generation of cellists, the German Arne Zeller (b. 2006) is a graduate of the Kronberg Academy and winner of the 2025 Budapest International Cello Competition. György Vashegyi, a conductor, choral director, researcher and teacher, is a central figure in historically informed performance in Hungary. He is the founder and director of the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra, and general music director of the Hungarian National Philharmonic.
