Two musical ensembles with a long history are celebrating some important anniversaries of theirs together. The Buda Franciscan Singing School, operating within Saint Angela School was founded 15 years ago, and the Saint Stephen Jubilee Symphonic Orchestra was revived 30 years ago by its founder, József Záborszky. The two groups began collaborating in 2023, when they took the stage together on Zoltán Kodály’s birthday for Psalmus Hungaricus. This next concert programme features Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana performed by the nearly 400 musicians of the orchestra and choir, along with opera singers Klára Kolonits, István Horváth and Norbert Balázs.

A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
