Sally Bowles, a nagyvárosi revütáncos egy éjszaka alatt habarodik bele Clifford Bradshow fiatal íróba, aki ihletet keresett könyvéhez, de helyette Sally-ben egy furcsa kapcsolatra lelt. A szentimentális, lökött lány hamar lerombolja Cliff naiv elképzeléseit az életről: eközben a kabaré pedig mindig az épp aktuális politikai rendszerekhez hűen alakítja műsorát, élén a Konferansziéval. Abban a korban pedig, amikor már annyira nem lehet hinni semmiben, hogy az ember könnyedén elhisz bármit, az új, teljhatalmú politikai párt vezetője pedig igyekszik Cliffet is magával rántani.
