A Budapest Jazz Orchestra elsődleges céljai közt szerepel az, hogy muzsikusai elsajátítsák azt a fajta sokszínű játékmódot, amit a műfaj sokrétűsége megkövetel annak művelőitől.
Mindezek mellett a legfontosabb feladatuknak tartják a jazz eljuttatását a műfaj iránt fogékony közönséghez, megmutatva számukra, hogy milyen is ez a muzsika, hogy honnan hová fejlődött az évtizedek alatt, megismertetni velük mind azokat az előadókat, akik mérföldkövei voltak ennek a zenének.
