Szophoklész drámájában, amely alapján a zenemű készült, Antigoné fivérei egymás keze által halnak meg, a király egyiküket árulónak kiáltja ki, de Antigoné a parancs ellenére el akarja őt temetni. Az ókori görög drámában az erkölcs csap össze a hatalommal, a testvéri szeretet és a szerelem próbál felülkerekedni a törvényeken, de a történet végül tragédiába torkollik.
