The concert of the Pécs-based orchestra will be special not only because they will perform pieces which are rarely heard in Hungary: the same works also bear testimony to the ways in which vocal and instrumental genres can communicate. This may take the form of song heard in parts the least expected, and remaining silent when the title or the genre seem to suggest otherwise.

Almost 20 minutes long, the four Sea Interludes, which are part of the first opera by Britten to be presented after the Second World War, are often played independently, as an orchestral suite. Nor is there a singing voice in Arvo Pärt’s tribute to the British composer, Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, it is only the ethereally clear melodies of the strings that sing. Sibelius’s five-movement symphonic poem on Kullervo, a tragic character from the Kalevala, becomes a so-called choral symphony, thanks to the use of soloists and a choir.

Arvo Pärt: Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten

Britten: Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes

Our offer

This ballet's plot is inspired by The Corsair, a famous verse written in 1814 by Lord Byron, who towered over an entire generation of English Romantic poets.

A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
