Hogy Amy mit válaszol, erről szólnak a következő tíz évük találkozásai. Mert hiába válnak el, újra és újra találkozni kényszerülnek, a három közös gyerek miatt, a sok közös ügyük miatt és még valami miatt, amit maguk sem értenek, mi az. Fölváltva sikeresek és kudarcosak a munkájukban és a kapcsolataikban egyaránt, miközben mindezt valami ürüggyel épp egymással tudják megbeszélni. Ezalatt észrevétlenül fölnőnek a gyerekeik is, akiknek különlegességén maguk is elcsodálkoznak, s aztán eljön az a pillanat, mikor Michael újra fölteszi a kérdést: „Leszünk barátok?"...
