Ingmar Bergman csodálatos, titkokkal teli története a valóság és a képzelet határán mozog. Az emberi lélek kiváló ismerője női karakterek életén, gondolatain keresztül visz minket egyre mélyebbre és mélyebbre a személyiség kiismerhetetlen, sérülékeny rétegeibe. Mikor jön el az a pont, amikor egy híres színésznő feladja karrierjét, s ráadásul képtelen megszólalni? Ki az, aki segíthet neki, hogy visszatérjen a mindennapokba? Egyáltalán vissza akar-e térni? Mindenesetre egy ápolónő megpróbálja a lehetetlent. De vajon mi ennek az ára?
