Csajkovszkij éppen Beethovenhez, a soron következő, 5. szimfóniához kapcsolódott a maga Negyedikjével; a mű elején, kürtökön felharsanó fanfárt sorsmotívumnak nevezi, amelyből, mint afféle motívumcsírából az egész mű lenyűgöző organizmusa kifejlődik, és halad végzete felé. A nemzetközi hírű Carlo Montanaro, a varsói Teatr Wielki zeneigazgatója elsősorban olasz operák karmestereként lép fel világszerte, de Zubin Mehta felfedezettjeként a szimfonikus irodalom remekműveiben is kamatoztatja a koncerttermek levegőjét átforrósító, drámai feszültséget teremtő képességeit.
