Kellemesen szórakoztató, ironikus operett a Bécsi vér, melynek szerelmet kergető főhősei a boldogságra törekszenek. Gróf Balduin Zedlau és felesége Gabrielle, valamint Franziska (Franzi) Cagliari táncosnő, továbbá a fiatal Pepi Pleininger modell, Ypsheim-Gindelbach herceg és Jozef, a gróf inasa olyan sikeresen kuszálják össze a szálakat, hogy a második felvonásra a néző csak kapkodja a fejét és nem érti: ki kinek udvarol. Vajon egy téves bemutatkozás és a feleség szeretővé degradálása miatt kialakult helyzet miként fokozódik? Megoldódik-e egyáltalán? A szereplők nem elégedettek jelenlegi választottjukkal, mindenki mást akar, ám egy váratlan leleplezés, valamint titkos találkozók tömkelege után helyre áll a rend. Johann Strauss, a keringőkirály gyönyörű, bohém és kedves dallamai elrepítenek minket a XIX. századvégi bécsi hangulatba, a Kelet Párizsába, a bécsi operett születésének korába.

Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
