Rejtő Jenő élete tele volt kalanddal, de sokat ezek közül máig homály fed. Például az 1924 és 1927 közötti időszakot az életéből teljesen. Testvérei szerint csak csellengett erre-arra, szülei azt hitték, hogy beállt az idegenlégióba, de egyik sem volt igaz. Mindenféle munkában kipróbálta magát, közben pedig figyelte az embereket és végül elhatározta, hogy író lesz, és megpróbál valami olyat csinálni, amit nem csinált még soha senki.

While the Fountain of Tears bubbles before him, Giray, khan of the Tatars, is lost in brooding. Just as the flow from the marble fount cannot be exhausted, his own sorrow will never diminish, either. The story of the Fountain of Bakhchisarai is set in motion by a romance recounting the reason for the khan's gloom.
