Veszélyes szerkezet egy gramofon. Alcide Chanal éppen üzenetet rögzít vele, hogy távol élő húgának esküvői gratulációt küldjön, de bekapcsolva felejti a felvevőt. Így azt is visszahallgatja később, amint felesége megbeszéli az esti randevút gyerekkori barátjával, Émile Renauxval. Rajtaütés, rendőrség, ökölharc... Dominóként borulnak a házasságok, válnak Chanalék, Renauxék, kézről kézre járnak az asszonyok és nincs megállás, mert minden szerető unalmas zsarnokká válik, amint férj lesz belőle.
Ady Endre egyszer megnézte a darabot Párizsban, és azt írta: "E bolondos, könnyű darab felett a hangulatok tarka illatfelhői lengenek. Nevessenek, de egy helyütt a darabban szinte megható, nemes poézis strófái csöngenek. Merészen kacérkodik néha a legszivárványosabb filozófiával, sőt magával az irodalommal.”.
(Egy évvel később) Ady miután megnézte a darabot Budapesten (is), így írt: „Feydeau úr (az író), ez az elmés ember annyi intelligenciával még nem volt elmés, mint e darabjában. És micsoda őrületesen bolondos helyzetek és figurák. Szikrázott úgy, hogy a szikrák rózsacsokrokat rajzoltak. De azért nem volt ez egészen léha este. Feydeau könnyek között tréfált.".

A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
