A regény létrejöttében az életrajzi mozzanatok mellett a korabeli közélet eseményei is jelen vannak a történetben, így a musical nézője átélheti, milyen is lehetett a reformkor utáni Magyarország élete.
Jókai utópiája részben erkölcsi és társadalmi, részben politikai és történelmi. A mű mondanivalója talán sosem volt időszerűbb, mint manapság, hiszen annak megírásakor 1872-ben, Jókait egyre nagyobb iszonyattal tölti el a modern polgári világ, a kapitalista civilizáció, és regényeiben hősei számára a menekvést teremti meg egy-egy valóságos, vagy – mai kifejezéssel élve – virtuális sziget fölrajzolásával.
