A fejedelem hamarosan kénytelen szembesülni a tragikus ténnyel: elsöprő erejű török támadás fenyeget, az ígért és várt nyugati segítség pedig késlekedik. Zsigmond már csak a székelyekre támaszkodhat: az ő segítségükkel fényes győzelmet arat a sokszoros túlerőben lévő török sereg fölött. Ugyanakkor a Rudolf császár unokahúgával kötött házasság nem hozza meg a boldogságot: Zsigmond szemlátomást idegenkedik fiatal feleségétől, elfordul tőle. Indulatos jelenetek után száműzi maga mellől és egy távoli erődítményben túszként őrizteti.
