A pillar of Hungarian culture, János Arany still ranks near the top in importance even 200 years after his birth. We celebrate his poetry, his ballads, his Toldy trilogy, his patriotism, his thoughtful reading of his contemporaries’ works, and himself as a president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences; and we can rejoice if an artist living far away is inspired by Arany’s poetry. Sir Karl Jenkins is one of those famous contemporary composers who composes in a language that is easy to understand, and is also active in film music. The ballad The Bards of Wales deeply impressed the Welsh-born composer whose oratorio of the same title has been performed at Carnegie Hall in New York. On the bicentenary of János Arany’s birth, this work will be performed in a festive production, and we will be conjuring up a real Bard of Wales festival around it.

Featuring: Kinga Újhelyi, MÁV Symphony Orchestra, Kaláka Band
Conductor: Gergely Kesselyák
Partner: Hungarian Academy of Sciences
