Az 1707-1708 táján keletkezett Christ lag in Todesbanden kantáta a ritka kivétel. Stílusa igen közel áll Buxtehude mind hangszerelésében, mind szerkesztésmódjában igen magasrendű egyházzenei alkotásaihoz, így joggal feltételezhető, hogy Bach már az arnstadti időszak végén, Buxtehudénál tett, nevezetes, lübecki útja (1705) után megírta.
