A mai világunk gyakran mutat hamis képet, amelyben az ember egykönnyen akár azt is elhiheti, hogy csak a külsőségek a fontosak. A császár új ruhája egy hiú császár, a császárkisasszony, egy nagyravágyó miniszter, valamint egy tiszta szívű és eszű magyar fiú történetét mutatja be. A mi - népmesei elemeket is tartalmazó - átdolgozásunkban ugyanis a császárkisasszony kérője Bonifác magyar fiú.
A császár nem szívesen viseli a hivatalával járó nehézségeket. Legszívesebben elmenekül feladatai elől. Ruháihoz megy, folyton újabbnál újabb kollekciókat tervez. Feladata azonban, hogy férjhez adja egyetlen leányát, Rozalindát, akinek eddig egyetlen kérő sem felelt meg. A szálakat összekuszálja a nagyravágyó Miniszter, a császár fő tanácsadója, akinek célja, hogy ügyeskedéseivel hatalomra jusson. Ám végül, a derék-furfangos magyar legény Bonifác görbe tükröt tartván eléjük, megleckézteti a Császárt, Rozalindát és a Minisztert is. A történetben erős karakterábrázolással mutatjuk be, tesszük egyértelművé, hogy milyen a helyénvaló és milyen a nevetséges viselkedés. S e mesejáték talán felnyitja szemünket a tekintetben, hogy mi is a különbség a hamis és a talmi között, s bizony az is kiderül, hogy nem a ruha teszi az embert…
