Amíg Amphitryon háborúzik, Jupiter Amphitryon képében elcsábítja Alkménét. Amikor Amphitryon hazaér fél év után, nem éppen úgy fogadják, ahogy ő azt elképzelte, sőt, szerelme, Alkméné azt állítja, hogy épp az imént voltak együtt.
Amphitryon szolgáját, Sosiast megveri Merkur – Sosias képében, majd Merkur – Sosias képében nem hajlandó lefeküdni rég nem látott feleségével, Alkméné szolgálónőjével, Charissal, sőt, sértések záporát zúdítja rá.
Az első jelenet után mi magunk, nézők is szemtanúkká válunk és végignézzük, hogy Isten a saját vágyainak beteljesítésével és akaratának érvényesítésével hogyan teszi tönkre az embert, akitől függ.
