Salieri nem elég tehetséges zeneszerző, de sikeres. Mozart viszont zseni. A XIX. század végi bécsi történet e két művész képtelen párbajáról szól, és a romantikus történet egy sor alapvető etikai, és filozófiai kérdést vet fel, csodálatos zeneművek kíséretében. Szellemes, virtuóz színmű, sok zenével és sok gondolattal.
