Admétosz, Pherai királya vendégül látja Apollónt. Az isten hálából megajándékozza: megmenti a haláltól, de valaki másnak meg kell halnia helyette. Felesége, Alkésztisz az egyetlen, aki vállalja az áldozatot. Utolsó kívánsága, hogy Admétosznak ne legyen másik felesége. Alkésztisz meghal. Admétosznak pedig együtt kell élnie az istentől kapott
ajándékkal.
