János Pál párizsi érsekké nevezi ki. 1984-ben, amikor a karmelita rend az egykori auschwitzi koncentrációs tábor mellett zárdát létesít, a zsidó közösségek heves tiltakozása mellett Lustiger a két oldal közötti közvetítő szerepébe kényszerül. A vita során szembesülnie kell saját múltjával, identitásával és lehetetlen döntéseket kell meghoznia. A film megtörtént esetet dolgoz fel.
