Milánó száműzött hercege, Prospero, egyedül neveli lányát egy varázslatos szigeten, ahol rajtuk kívül csak mesebeli lények élnek. Egy napon a trónbitorló herceg hajója viharba kerül és hajótörést szenved. Prospero számára itt az alkalom, hogy visszaszerezze hatalmát és megbüntesse a bűnösöket.
Shakespeare utolsó drámája mese - és elmélkedés a politikáról. A mesében lelepleződik a kisszerűség és az ostobaság, és valódi hatalomnak tűnik a bölcsesség és a morális tartás.
